Introduction: Listen to the Audio Description for the Performance at Fallen Angels Recovery Social: Monday 16 June, 6pm in The Garret Theatre, Storyhouse, thanks to Hear the Picture:
Fallen Angels Movement Chester Hub’s performance project delves into the experiences of visual impairment, aiming to create a unique and immersive experience for both visually impaired and sighted audiences. The project explores themes of belonging and the challenges faced by those with visual impairments, transforming personal experiences into a powerful artistic expression.
Experiencing the World Without Sight:
The performance seeks to offer a glimpse into the world of someone with visual impairment. By using dance, audio descriptions, and lighting techniques, Fallen Angels aims to evoke the sensations and perceptions of navigating the world without sight. The performance strives to give the audience a deeper understanding of the challenges and resilience of those living with visual impairment.
A Multi-Sensory Approach:
For visually impaired audience members, the performance incorporates audio descriptions delivered through headphones, providing a detailed narrative of the dancers’ movements and the overall meaning of the piece. The project also utilises lighting to enhance the experience for those with visual impairments. We’ve delivered outreach workshops with our partners Vision Support and Tomorrow’s Women, exploring senses like touch, hearing, and smell. These workshops allowed participants to experience and draw inspiration from a heightened sensory awareness, which in turn feeds into the performance itself.
From Personal Stories to Collective Expression:
The project’s genesis lies in personal experiences and shared creativity. It began with individual items that held significance for the performers, including a painting created by a mother with a visual impairment. This initial exploration evolved into a collective desire to create a performance centred around visual impairment and belonging, reflecting the performers’ personal journeys and artistic vision.
A Project in Progress:
The current performance is the first stage of a larger project, with plans for future expansions and enhancements. Upcoming performances may incorporate stage props and costumes, further enriching the audience’s experience. A larger performance is scheduled for September, promising a more comprehensive and immersive exploration of these powerful themes.
