Fallen Angels Movement – Russell Maliphant Days

With each new project, comes a new opportunity to grow – and this time, Fallen Angels were thrilled to spend two intensive days with multi-award-winning choreographer Russell Maliphant. Held on 12th and 13th August at the stunning Theatre Porto in Whitby Park, Ellesmere Port, the sessions ran from 10am to 3pm and offered a deep dive into the bio-mechanics of movement.

Exploring the Science of Movement

Russell guided us through the science behind how our bodies move, making complex concepts accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or experience. We explored how the skeleton and muscles expand and contract, creating visually compelling movement and enhancing our understanding of weight shifts and centre-mass. One key takeaway was how shifting weight can help us flow seamlessly from one movement to another-a revelation that opened up new possibilities in choreography.

Day Two:

Rotation, Momentum & Emotional Release
The second day focused on rotation and momentum, again emphasising weight shifting. Many Angels shared how this had an emotional impact, helping them feel lighter and aiding in the release of trauma from the body.

We explored how emotional responses are tied to physical movement, particularly through the relationship between the skeleton and fascia (the soft tissue network that connects everything). The theme of connection-both physical and emotional-was central to the day.

Simple Movements, Profound Effects
Angels discovered that simple movements can be powerful tools for releasing tension. We worked with concepts like tension/release and expand/contract-seemingly opposite ideas that, when combined, create effective and accessible movement for all. For the next stage, we will be taking what we have learned from our time with Russell Maliphant and interpreting it in our own unique ways to create a piece for the UK Recovery Walk taking place in Wolverhampton on Saturday 13th September. It promises to be a unique piece and we can’t wait to share it with everyone!
